Do you find that pain and anxiety is enough to drive you away from scheduling an appointment with your dentist?
There may be hope. Our Grand Rapids dentist at Precision Family Dental recognize that each of our patient’s cases are unique and may require different services to ensure that they receive quality health care.
One of the dental services we offer is pill sedation dentistry for patients who qualify.
How Can I Qualify for Pill Sedation?
Pill sedation, also called oral sedation, is ideal for patients who experience anxiety from a trip to their dentist’s office. Pill sedation is also great for people suffering from medical issues that may hinder their ability to undergo basic procedures or sit in the dentist’s chair for prolonged periods of time.
For your convenience, we have created a list of issues that may warrant pill sedation.
- Involuntary Body Movement
- Back or Neck Pain
- Sore Jaw Muscles
- High Gag Reflex
- Low Pain Threshold
- Anxiety
If any of these medical issues interfere with receiving dental care, you may want to consider pill sedation. Pill sedation can make it less stressful for you during your bi-annual dentist visits. Reducing anxiety also facilitates your relationship with us, so that you can feel more comfortable coming to us if a major dental problem crops up.
How Does Pill Sedation Work?
Before prescribing a pill sedative, your dentist will have a conversation with you to determine if it is a good fit for your unique situation. There are a variety of oral sedatives that can be prescribed; however, the most common pill is
, which shares a drug family with Valium.Pill sedation helps in reducing anxiety during your visit!
You will be instructed to take your pill an hour before your dentist appointment. Once you have taken the pill, you will begin to feel drowsy, but not tired enough to fall asleep. The sedative will be enough to eliminate physical or emotional discomfort, but won’t be enough to render you unconscious. If you do happen to fall asleep, you won’t be deeply unconscious and can be woken with ease.
Benefits of Pill Sedation
It is important to see your Grand Rapids family dentist every six months for a teeth cleaning and oral examination. If you neglect scheduling visits for preventative care, you are at higher risk for cavities, gum disease, and other oral health issues. If you have a dental phobia that prevents you from going to the dentist, we recommend scheduling an appointment with one of our dentists to discuss pill sedation.
