Can Braces Change Your Appearance

Your smile says a lot about your personality. If you’ve ever felt embarrassed about your teeth, request an appointment with our dentist. Dr. Piotrowski offers a range of options for orthodontic treatment, from Clear Alignment Therapy to traditional metal braces.

Since braces move your teeth and jaw, your appearance will change over time.

Here’s how dental braces can change your appearance and improve your quality of life.

Crooked, Crowded Teeth

Crowded teeth affect the appearance of your smile and oral health. Traditional metal braces work by exerting enough pressure on teeth to move them into alignment.

As your orthodontic treatment progresses, you’ll notice your teeth start to move. Crooked teeth will start to straighten out and go to their proper positions.

Fixing a crooked smile will also help you practice good oral hygiene. It’s much easier to brush and floss teeth when they don’t overlap.

Overbite

An overbite can make you look as though you don’t have a chin. People with overbites also tend to have protruding upper lips and sunken cheeks.

The good news is that Dr. Piotrowski will be able to use braces and other oral appliances to bring your jaw forward.

So much of your appearance depends on the underlying jaw bones and teeth. It may surprise you how much your appearance may change after correcting an overbite.

Underbite

An underbite can make your chin stick out or make it look as though your jaw is too big for your face. You may also have an underbite if your bottom lip sticks out farther than your upper lip.

Our dentist will be able to come up with a plan to straighten teeth and move your jaw back. That way, you can achieve a natural-looking profile.

Most of our patients come to us for straighter teeth. But many don’t realize their jaws also play a role in how their face looks.

Open Bite

Do your teeth look larger than they actually are? If so, our dentist may diagnose you with an open bite. An open bite can also make it difficult to close your mouth naturally.

You’re more at risk for an open bite if you have tongue thrust or sucked your thumb as a child. The sooner we can treat an open bite, the better.

If your child has an open bite, our dentist can help their jaws grow more evenly. Dr. Piotrowski can also encourage them to break bad oral habits like thumb sucking.
